Bad news in the world of cycling and sports in general. Italy has been devastated by the terrible tragedy that has assailed the young cyclist Giuseppe Milone, who has died at the age of 17, victim of a run over. The young runner was run over last Wednesday without being able to survive the accident.
Italian sport and the world of cycling in general are in mourning after this terrible news that has shocked an entire country to see how a boy so young and with so much life ahead of him, has died while practicing his passion, cycling, victim of a fatal accident in which he was hit by a truck.
The event took place last Sunday when Guiseppe Milone was riding a bicycle near the city of Messina. There the fatal incident occurred when a truck rammed him hard and very violently. Several Italian media reported this Wednesday of a death that has finally been confirmed.
After what happened, the medical services quickly moved to the Gualtieri Sicaminò area, where there was a run over and habitual traffic for many cyclists and athletes due to its beauty and its own characteristics to speed up the point of physical form due to its multiple levels of difficulty.
A helicopter was transferred to that place with the intention of expediting the transfer of the young man to the hospital and thus doing the most for his life as quickly as possible, since the injuries he presented were serious. However, the damage suffered was really incompatible with life and despite the speed with which he received attention, nothing could be done to save the life of this 17-year-old boy.
A young promise
Guiseppe Milone was considered one of the great promises of cycling in his region and in Italy in general with successes of great importance. He was known throughout the transalpine country for having achieved the title of ‘King of Etna’, by passing a test of extreme hardness riding his bicycle.
This test consisted of ascending the six slopes of the Etna volcano, the mythical summit of the Giro d’Italia and which was climbed for the last time in the last edition won by INEOS cyclist Tao Geoghegan Hart. The data for this bestial challenge are 205 kilometers and route and more than 7,000 meters of accumulated unevenness. An effort of more than almost 13 hours for a young man of only 17 years old. A real outrage. “I am proud to have achieved it. I worked hard and only with effort can you overcome your limits,” he said upon completing his feat.
This tragedy has become even more important due to Giuseppe Milone’s close relationship with one of the best Italian cyclists of recent decades, Vincenzo Nibali, multiple winner of the Giro d’Italia and winner of the three Grand Tours. Milone belonged to the team of young talents led by the star of the Trek-Segafredo team.
It was precisely Nibali who confirmed the news of the death after several media advanced it in the last hours: “This morning I woke up with the news of the tragic death of Giuseppe. That is why I ran with a black belt on my arm. remember it one last time. Now is the time for silence. I send a big hug to Giuseppe’s family. May he rest in peace. ” In addition, he has announced that he will conclude his participation in the UAE Tour, the first race on the World Tour calendar, which he is contesting this week with that black tie in his honor.
